Onze organisatie:
The Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (WdKA/RUAS), offers a variety of bachelor and master programs in the field of visual culture, art, design, fine art & design teacher training, education and leisure & events management. These courses prepare students for a career in the cultural manufacturing industry, as an artist, as designer, as a maker and performer, as a teacher, as a researcher or as a organizer. In addition to the various courses (majors) and minors (practices), WdKA has stations. In the stations; stations are advanced workshops within a learning environment in where facilities and expertise are offered that focus on skills and offer a place where students can conduct research through making.

About the ceramic/ plastic workshop, part of the Material Station
The Material Station is an educational environment where students can find facilities and expertise about ceramics/plastic, wood, metal and digital fabrication technologies. In this station, students are able to do material research (3d) and explore all kinds of techniques. Due to the great diversity in the learning questions of students, an instructor at the Material Station is required to have a broad professional knowledge; having said that, each instructor has his own specialization. Within the Material Station, basic and advanced techniques are offered by means of instructions. In addition, a great deal of time and attention is devoted to individual guidance, in which we encourage students to use innovative techniques in the implementation of their projects. The ceramic/ plastic workshop is well equipped and is divided into a space for working with ceramics, hard plastics/ glass, liquid plastics, a room with multiple kilns and glaze kitchen and an open area where students can work independent with ceramics.

Wat ga je doen?
For the ceramic workshop we are looking for an enthusiastic colleague who has extensive experience with ceramics and is interested in working with plastics. As an instructor you are not only involved in the individual supervision of students, but you also give instruction lessons about mostly ceramics and less in working with plastics in the broadest sense of the word. You also make an active contribution to the development of the ceramic workshop. You think along about how, for example, an important theme such as sustainability or the application of new but also forgotten technologies can be given a place in the workshop. We are looking for someone who can think beyond the limits of current techniques and who dares to experiment together with students. Our staff is diverse, not just in terms of practice profiles but also in terms of culture, gender, and ethnicity.

You are able to:
  • Guide and support students with individual issues in the field of working with ceramics and plastics.
  • Instructing classes in mostly ceramics and partly plastics. These lessons are given mostly in English.
  • Develop instructions.
  • Deal with pressure and stress.
  • Manage a ceramic/ plastic workshop, where you are responsible for both maintenance and initial repairs.
  • Support teachers in guiding the students.
  • Together with your colleagues, you help to develop blended and hybrid forms of education, so it becomes possible for students to find support and get acquainted with the workshop before or after they have been introduced to the physical space of the workshop.
  • Willing to also work/ support in other workshops
You are open to learn and professionalize through didactic training, skill related professionalization and participation in working groups and national/international meetings/webinars. You actively participate in a team of colleagues with whom you work within the station to create an inspiring work and learning environment for students. You are, with your colleagues, responsible for the management, maintenance, and development of the ceramic plastic- workshop and the open spaces of the Material Station. You are also responsible for supervision, control and management of the materials and machines present. You are also willing to assist within the Material Station where necessary.
