Job Description

Business Unit Solar and Batteries (SoBa) is part of Vattenfall’s Business Area Wind which is responsible for Vattenfall’s Renewable activities within Wind, Solar PV and Battery Storage.

BU Solar & Batteries is responsible for all large scale solar and battery development and has as its purpose to enable fossil free living within one generation through profitable solar and battery assets. To fulfill this purpose the BU is active along the whole value chain from early stage development to operations.

The BU’s actual main focus is realizing a strong portfolio growth in both Solar & Battery technologies in Germany and the Netherlands. In Germany the BU has a PV pipeline over 5 GW in Solar and over 1 GW in Batteries, both still growing rapidly.

Within the BU the Delivery department is responsible for bringing advanced stage projects (meaning permit, land rights and grid are secured) towards a positive investment decision and, after that decision, the successful construction and operation of the projects in line with agreed budgets and timelines. The Delivery department consists of 4 teams. An engineering, a contract management, an asset management and a construction mgmt. team.

The construction mgmt. team is responsible for obtaining the investment decisions for and construction of the projects according to plan. For this team, Vattenfall is currently seeking a manager.

The Delivery team within BU Solar & Batteries is now looking for a dedicated Head of Construction Management:

Qualifications

Key responsibilities and mandate

Team development & staffing:

  • Lead the Construction management team in BU SoBa
  • Coach/lead the individual Project construction managers to successful completion of their projects
  • Increase technical know-how in the team in project management, commissioning, HSE and quality
  • Define and update construction standards and project management requirements for projects
  • Develop and implement staffing and staff development plan to ensure the needs of a growing pipeline can be met

Project/Portfolio management:

  • Ensure the safe, timely and on budget delivery of up to 15 large scale construction projects in parallel
  • Ensure the development of up to 20 late stage development projects towards successful Final investment Decision
  • Develop and maintain supplier relations with key partners for the construction of the project portfolio
  • Lead the Contract/Commercial discussions with 3rd parties for portfolio topics or when escalation from project manager level is needed.

Number of employees or teams to steer: 12 direct reports as of today, with a significant increase in the next 12 to 24 months, due a significant increase in the construction pipeline.

Your profile / who are you?

  • Proven track record managing teams and leading people
  • Minimum of 7 years of proven and relevant work experience in the construction of renewable energy projects, within different countries and multinational environments
  • Master’s degree from an university in an engineering or relevant scientific subject.
  • Experience in managing internationally distributed technical teams.
  • German language skills are a pre.

Geographical area of responsibility:

All the main locations of BA Soba (NL/GER).

Location

The location of the position is either Berlin, Hamburg or Amsterdam. Occasional travel within northern Europe should be expected.
