Gerrit Rietveld Academie The Gerrit Rietveld Academie (GRA) is a small-scale, independent internationally oriented university of applied sciences for visual arts and design. The GRA consists of the Rietveld Academy (Bachelor's education, divided into 14 departments, the Sandberg Institute (Master's education, divided into 7 departments), the Lectorate Art & Spatial Praxis (LASP), 23 workshops and 2 preparatory courses. The academy has around 850 students and 130 course participants. The organization has an international character, which makes the academy a diverse community. The entire academy has approximately 200 teachers, most of whom are also independent artists or designers or have a practice connected to the artistic field as contemplators or theorists. The academy is characterized by research-based and experimental art education, where (head) teachers, workplace specialists, students and staff together shape and give content to education and research. Description of the department Dealing with clay as the core of our discipline, the Ceramics department is a place where students are free to engage with other techniques and materials outside the field of ceramics.In its own separate workshop, the Ceramics department offers an opportunity to develop practical and sculptural skills. Students are encouraged to explore beyond the boundaries of the discipline with their sculptural and spatial work employing old and new technologies alongside each other. In this environment, a solid technical introduction to the ceramics process including constructing shapes, making moulds, casting, turning and glazing are offered. There is a constant interaction between experimentation, creation, reflection and developing ideas among the students, lecturers and technicians in the communal workspace. Individual supervision and group discussions are encouraged to share knowledge of the medium. Position We are looking for a teacher with technical knowledge of ceramics who can guide students in the development of their artistic process. The position is open for artists and designers active in the field of ceramics who have graduated at least 5 years ago. Experience in education is a must. We are looking for someone with a broad scope of technical knowledge, including building techniques like slab-building, press-molding, hand-building/coiling, mold making, glazing techniques, throwing, technical knowledge about firing kilns. The content of your teaching joins the teaching of the other teachers in the team. We are looking for someone who is available for teaching at the academy for 5 hours every two weeks. Teaching includes studio visits and lectures with 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students of our department. Regular discussions on the alignment of the different teaching strains within the department will be part of the appointment. Further tasks include participation in the assessments in the end of both semesters (2 full days) and team meetings. Excursion and other extra-curricular activities are optional and do not come with the contract.
