Technician: Toxicology

At the Toxicology division we aim to improve the scientific basis of chemical risk assessment through fundamental and applied innovative research, teaching and training in mechanistic and predictive toxicology. We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative technician to achieve these goals and strengthen our Toxicology Division, which is made up of four research groups: Endocrine-, Immune- and Neuro-toxicology and Exposure Assessment. You will be working on different activities and projects, all focused on improving in vitro toxicity testing. A large part of your work will be performed within in the Neurotoxicology Research Group and will be related to the research project INTACT (abbreviation for: Integrated in vitro toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics to advance multi-organ toxicity testing ) and is in collaboration with the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). INTACT’s goal is to apply and develop innovative models and test methods in the risk assessment of substances for humans without animal tests. To do so, multiple in vitro modules (for example liver, brain, and blood-brain barrier) will be combined to mimic physiological-relevant exposure and kinetics. You will work with various advanced in vitro models (cell lines, primary cells, stem cells) and different culture conditions (2D, 3D, barrier models) to elucidate if environmental chemicals can ultimately reach and affect vital organs leading to adverse effects. Your work will specifically include development and improvement of in vitro models for the brain, the blood-brain-barrier, the heart, the gut and the liver. With these models, you will investigate the potential damage of environmental chemicals using various techniques, ranging from ELISA, PCR, and cell bioassays to cellular imaging (fluorescence microscopy) and microelectrode array recordings. You will support students and (PhD) researchers working on diverse projects that all aim to investigate the potential adverse effects of diverse environmental chemicals. In addition, part of your work will focus on general laboratory duties such as ordering, management of instruments, and maintenance of our electronic lab journal system. We are looking for a colleague with a Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc)/HLOdegree (or equivalent) in the field of life sciences and/or biomedical sciences, with a strong interest in cell biology and toxicology. You have a good verbal and written communication skills in English. Moreover, you are able to work both independently and in our dynamic team. Experience with cell culture techniques is essential. Experience with molecular analysis and cellular imaging techniques is considered a plus. A diploma on animal experimentation (EU function FELASA A+C; ex. art. 13f.2) is an advantage. a temporary positionfor one year, with a possible extension for another year; a working week of32-40 hours and a gross monthly salary between €2,693and €3,636in the case of full-time employment (salary scale 7 under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU)); 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus; a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment based on the CAO NU.
